Today, we say goodbye to a truly warm and wonderful soul, Uncle Mannie. I’ve known him nearly my whole life, and he was a simple, humble family man – loving, caring, and generous – who made an immeasurable contribution to our community. His passion for soccer and athletics was undeniable; he gave his all to the game. As a founding member of Gandhis Hill Football Club, his dedication to the growth and development of amateur football in Tongaat will be long remembered. My friends Dessy Arumugam and Kuga Padayachee, who knew him best in this context, will speak further to his achievements with the club.
Uncle Mannie stood tall with us during our country’s struggle for liberation, actively supporting the cause. He was instrumental in garnering support for vital community organizations: the Voice of the People – Tongaat Civic Association, and the Tongaat Sports Ground Association (the precursor to the Tongaat Sports Council). He and his late wife, Bommie, were a remarkable team, always ready to assist community organizations in Tongaat. Their kindness and generosity knew no bounds; they were truly selfless.
Uncle Mannie was a well-known and beloved figure in Tongaat. Gandhis Garage, where he worked for many years, served as a meeting place for many of us living in the Group housing schemes. He will be deeply missed.
Our deepest sympathies go to his family. We are grateful for the opportunity to have shared him with us.
